The late show

Captain Brett Crozier has been relieved of command of USS Theodore Roosevelt after he wrote a letter asking for the evacuation of its crew.  A number of sailors had tested positive for coronavirus.  Now we know why no other Navy or Coast Guard commanders have been willing to speak out.

Ellis Marsalis, pianist and father of Branford and Wynton Marsalis, died of heart failure and possible COVID-19, age 85.  The songwriter Adam Schlesinger, 52, has also died.

Food banks and soup kitchens, which rely on donated food from restaurants and grocery stores, are struggling to feed people, especially in New York City.  Contributions of $10 million from Oprah Winfrey and $100 million from Jeff Bezos, while welcome, will only alleviate the problem for a few days.  Other cities are also seeking help.  Is "government cheese" still a thing?

Speaking of food, TV chef and restauranteur Bobby Flay laid off all his employees and established a GoFundMe to raise $100,000 for them, which he promises to match.  Since his net worth is said to be north of $30 million, this has caused some comment, little of it complimentary to the chef.

As reported here, horse racing went on as scheduled at Cheltenham, England, last month before thousands of spectators.  Many have now reported COVID-19 symptoms, including the comedian Lee Mack, of whom I am a YouTube fan.  Should have known better.  As of yesterday, Royal Ascot and the Derby are still scheduled to take place.  And fans of cheesy amateur pop music will get a synthetic version of the Eurovision Song Contest in May hosted by Graham Norton.  There are things you just can't do without.

The blood supply is so depleted that the FDA has relaxed its AIDS-era restrictions on who can donate.  As long as they are healthy, it will now welcome gay and bisexual men, people who recently got piercings or tattoos, and even people who have traveled to places where there is malaria.  I hope this will not make an awful situation catastrophic.

Not to worry, the pandemic may not be real!  So suggests the Republican Party of El Paso County, Colorado, in a charming (now deleted) Facebook post.  Party chair Vickie Tonkins should be flown to New York and locked in a refrigerated truck with some "crisis actors" before being allowed near Facebook again.  Twenty-four hours sounds about right.

Remember the emergency bill before the emergency bill?  The one to guarantee paid sick leave for people who didn't already have it?  Yeah, not so much.

And finally, on a lighter note:  Like all sociopaths, Trump has no sense of humor.  So when a reporter asked him about "a surge of calls in reports about domestic violence," and he replied, "Mexican violence?" it wasn't a self-deprecating joke on his history of lies about Mexicans.  He can't hear and is too vain to admit it.  Also, any kind of disability disturbs him, which is why his "briefings" never have the sign-language interpreter you see at all the rest.  Also, he does not self-deprecate, OK?
